Aphid (Homoptera: Aphididae) accumulation and distribution near fences designed for cabbage fly (Diptera: Anthomyiidae) exclusion Organic Eprints
Bomford, M.K.; Vernon, R.S.; Pats, Peeter.
Aphids accumulate near exclusion fences designed to intercept Delia radicum (L.) movement into fields. Aphid accumulations increase with fence height, but are not affected by fence overhang length. Overall aphid levels are higher in small (4.3 x 4.3 m) enclosed plots than in unenclosed plots. Enclosing large (38 x 38 m) plots does not alter overall aphid catches, but does alter aphid distribution within enclosures. In large enclosures aphid accumulations are higher at enclosure perimeters than interiors, with the highest accumulations near enclosure corners. This concentric distribution is not observed in unfenced areas, and is not altered by the addition of a trap crop inside an enclosure.

Apple and Pear Cultivars for Organic Production in a Cool Climate Organic Eprints
Røen, Dag; Hjeltnes, Stein Harald; Jaastad, Gunnhild.
Only early ripening cultivars of apples and pears may be grown successfully in the short and rather cool growth season of the fruit producing areas of Norway. Due to a combination of high yield, good fruit quality and scab resistance, the Swedish cultivar ‘Aroma’ is recommended as major cultivar for organic apple production today. ’Philip’ is recommended as cultivar for organic pear production. During 5 years 21 apple cultivars and 15 pear cultivars have been tested in organic orchards in comparison with ‘Aroma’ and ‘Philip’. Several cultivars in the trial are promising for use in organic production.

Apple scab control with grapefruit seed extract: no alternative to chemical fungicides Organic Eprints
Spitaler, Renate; Marschall, Klaus; Zidorn, Christian; Kelderer, Markus; Zelger, Roland; Stuppner, Hermann.
The growth inhibiting effect of four commercially available grapefruit seed extracts on the causal organism of apple scab Venturia inaequalis was tested. Germination of the conidia of Venturia inaequalis was pronouncedly inhibited by all tested extracts. The commercial products were analyzed by high pressure liquid chromatography and thin layer chromatography. All samples contained at least one preserving agent. These substances were identified as either benzethonium chloride, benzalkonium chloride, methyl parabene or propyl parabene. Freshly prepared extracts from seeds of grapefruits (Citrus paradisi) did not inhibit the germination of Venturia inaequalis. It was therefore concluded that the antifungal effect of grapefruit seed extracts is...

Applications de soufre en automne: une nouvelle manière de lutter contre l`ériophyide à galles du poirier. Organic Eprints
Daniel, Claudia; Wyss, Eric; Linder, Christian.
Autumn applications of sulphur – a new approach to control the pear leaf blister mite Eriophyes pyri. Abstract: The pear leaf blister mite can cause severe damage to pear leaves and young fruits in some regions. Due to hidden living inside leaf blisters, the mites are largely protected against the impact of plant protecting agents. Until now, treatments with mineral oil or rape oil in early spring, during the time when the mites leave their hibernation sites under the bud scales to invade the young leaves and blossoms, are the only possibility to control these mites in Swiss organic fruit growing. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of sulphur, mineral oil and Surround®WP applied after harvest during the time, when the mites leave their...

Applications of signal transduction and xerophytophysiology by exposing hypocotyls in organic peanut production Organic Eprints
Qin, Feifei; Xu, Hui-lian; Takano, Tetsuo.
The AnM practices in peanut production included three steps. The three letters, A, n and M, showed the shapes of the section-cross of the ridge at the three steps of different growth stages of the peanut crop. First, the peanut seeds were sown a little deeper than usual, about 8 cm, in the ridge to induce the extra-elongation of the hypocotyl. When the seeds were sown, the cross-section of the ridge looked like the letter “A”. The second, the hypocotyls elongated more than usual were exposed to light and dry air by removing the soil away around the young seedlings just after the emergence. At this time, the cross-section of the ridge looked like the letter “n”. The third, at the middle growth stages, soils on the both sides of ridge were earthed up to...

Approaches for field assessment of resistance to leaf pathogens in spring barley varieties Organic Eprints
Pinnschmidt, H.O.; Hovmøller, M.S.; Østergård, H..
The resistance of spring barley varieties to powdery mildew, leaf rust, leaf scald and net blotch was characterized by using results from inoculated small-plot nurseries and larger survey plots subject to natural infection. The experiments were conducted in different environments. Both trial types often yielded complementary results with respect to the ranking of varieties suggesting that a recommended variety characterization should include both naturally infected survey-type trials and nursery trials in which the most relevant pathogen isolates and/or isolate mixtures or populations are used for inoculation. Average and median values of the diseased leaf area of a variety were highly correlated with each other and with the genotype main effect determined...

Approaches to pest management in organic agriculture: a case study in European apple orchards Organic Eprints
Wyss, Eric; Luka, Henryk; Pfiffner, Lukas; Schlatter, Christian; Gabriela, Uehlinger; Daniel, Claudia.
Although the European organic agriculture movement was founded by Rudolf Steiner and Hans Mueller in the years between 1924 and 1940, it was not until the 1980s that pest management researchers began to develop strategies to control pests in organic systems. Today, insect pest management in organic agriculture involves the adoption of scientificallybased and ecologically sound strategies as specified by international and national organic production standards. These include a ban on synthetic insecticides and, more recently, on genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The first phase of an insect pest management program for organic systems is the adoption of cultural practices including diverse crop rotation, enhancement of soil quality by incorporation of...

Are organically grown apples tastier and healthier? A comparative field study using conventional and alternative methods to measure fruit quality Organic Eprints
Weibel, F.P.; Bickel, R.; Leuthold, S.; Alfoeldi, T..
Since 1994 important supermarket chains in Switzerland successfully sell apples from verified organic production. However, in supermarkets customers often ask whether there are, apart from a more environmentally friendly production, objective arguments of inner fruit quality that justify the higher prices of organic apples. In a field study with the ‘Golden Delicious’ cultivar, we harvested fruits of 5 pairs of organic/integrated fruit farms. The orchards within the pairs were less than 1 km from each other and were similar in micro climate, soil conditions and planting system. Maximum distance between the pairs was 180 km. To measure inner fruit quality we investigated at the beginning and at the end of cold storage (i) standard parameters (firmness,...

Are there alternatives to copper for controlling grapevine downy mildew in organic viticulture? Organic Eprints
Dagostin, Silvia; Schärer, Hans-Jakob; Pertot, Ilaria; Tamm, Lucius.
Downy mildew caused by the obligate biotrophic oomycete Plasmopara viticola is one of the most important and devastating diseases of grapevine. Copper-based fungicides are used to control the disease in organic vineyards. However, since 2006, copper use has been limited by an European Commission regulation. In this study conducted from 2004 to 2007, we tested materials that might replace copper in organic viticulture, under controlled greenhouse and field conditions at two locations in Europe (northern Italy and Switzerland). We tested 112 different treatments, including biocontrol agents, materials of animal origin, homeopathic preparations, inorganic materials, microbial extracts, natural derivatives, plant extracts, physical methods and synthetic...

Arthropod pest management in organic crops Organic Eprints
Zehnder, Geoff; Gurr, Geoff M.; Kühne, Stefan; Wade, Mark R.; Wratten, Steve D.; Wyss, Eric.
Burgeoning consumer interest in organically produced foods has made organic farming one of the fastest growing segments of agriculture. This growth has not been supported adequately by rigorous research to address challenges such as arthropod pest management. The research that has been conducted, however, is complemented by research in aspects of conventional agriculture that may have applicability in organic systems, as well as by research in underpinning fields such as applied ecology. This article synthesizes the available literature in relation to a conceptual model of arthropod pest management strategies suitable for organic systems. The present work uses the four phases of the model to review the strategies in an agroecological context and provides a...

Aspekte der Strohmulchanwendung im ökologischen Kartoffelanbau – II.Wirkung auf Potato Virus Y, Leptinotarsa decemlineata und Knollenertrag Organic Eprints
Döring, Thomas F.; Heimbach, Udo; Thieme, Thomas; Saucke, Helmut.

Döring, Thomas F.; Heimbach, Udo; Thieme, Thomas; Finckh, Maria R.; Saucke, Helmut.

Presprouting of seed tubers is a measure that is often recommended for organic potato growing. In on-farm field experiments the effect of presprouting was evaluated with respect to virus infection, yield and weed infestation. The effect of presprouting on yield was largely dependent on the year and on the late blight severity. Weeds were not affected significantly by presprouting. In most experiments virus incidence was higher in presprouted potatoes. Presprouting also had a suppressive effect on undesired regrowth after haulm destruction.

Assessing the sustainability of a stockless arable rotation (OF0318) Organic Eprints
Cormack, William.
The majority of organic conversions have been on upland grass-based livestock farms resulting in a shortage of UK-grown cereals and pulses. Across northern Europe, conventional agriculture has developed a specialised structure with many areas having no livestock, or knowledge or facilities to support livestock. Sustainable organic production on these farms has particular challenges for nutrient supply, for the management of weeds, pests and diseases and for economically viability. This report covers a three and a half year period (four crop harvests) of a longer-term programme of work, which began in 1990. The overall objective was to identify and overcome factors limiting the sustainability of a stockless arable rotation. Specific objectives were to 1)...
